My passion for painting arose from my love of nature and, in particular, animals. I have always striven to understand the essential nature or soul of living beings.  Painting is the perfect way to express the spirit of animals and the world we live in.

I draw your animal portrait from a range of photos that you send me, therefore, taking a good photo of your companion can be challenging. A high quality photo makes a real difference to the detail in the drawing, so it really is worth getting the best possible reference photo.

I commissioned Hazel to paint our two dogs, Luna and Willow, as a surprise Christmas gift for my husband. Hazel was a joy to work with throughout the project, taking the greatest care to select appropriate photographs to represent each dog’s characteristics. The painting arrived expertly wrapped and protected, ready for framing. Hazel has captured the hounds absolutely perfectly (despite never having met them in person!). Their likeness is quite extraordinary… somehow Hazel has brought them alive through her art, and they almost leap off the paper! "Hazel has created portraits of two Rocky Mountain Horses for us and I can only say that we are thoroughly delighted with them. So much so in fact, that we have commissioned a third of our youngest RMH who I now four years old and just started under saddle. As you will see from the portraits, our horses have a special colour, with silver and gold shining through. Hazel has captured this perfectly. Hazel spends time with the horses, studying their conformation, character and colour, taking photos and really getting to know them. With the metallic reflections on coats of the Rockies this is no mean feat and Hazel comes back to revisit the subjects and to consult us on the accuracy of colours and stance. We are delighted to recommend Hazel for the portraits of your horse, dog and other loved animals. We have seen our friends’ pet portraits, created by Hazel and they are also beautifully true to life.

Jane Butling
I have known Hazel for many years now, drawn together by our love of animals, notably our horses and dogs. I have had the opportunity to see first-hand in her studio, her many and varied subjects and mediums in which she works. I have always been amazed and astounded by her attention to fine detail and the way in which she is able to capture the essence and character of the subject she is painting or drawing. In her portraits of animals, the eyes are alive and looking at you and you can almost feel the fine hair of a dog’s coat or the horse’s mane! When my daughter was married I commissioned Hazel to make a portrait of Robyn and Mike’s faithful and darling little rescue dog, Mac as a Wedding present and I wasn’t disappointed! Hazel captured Mac’s cheeky little face and her artistic flair for presentation put him against a dark background that really made him stand out. Robyn and Mike were over the moon with the portrait and it hangs in pride of place in their new home!
